Cyclic Lead Acid Batteries
12V Batteries used to store solar power
Batteries are required to store the power generated by solar panels as DC electricity.
Choosing a Battery
Battery capacity is measured in Amp-Hours ( Ah).
Do not deplete any battery by more than about 50% because it will shorten its life. Therefore to get the most out of your 12V battery do not use more than half of its rated amp hour capacity before recharging it again. For example a 200Ah battery should only provide 100Ah before it is recharged.
How much electricity is 100 amp hours?
If a 12V appliance draws a current of 5 amps then it will consume 100 Ah in 20 hours (Amps X hours = amp hours).
How to calculate amps from watts
Watts are a measure of the total power, calculated by multiplying the amps times the volts. For a 12 Volt system, 5 amps x 12 volts = 60 watts. So if you have a 12 volt appliance rated at 60 watts then it will draw a current of 5 amps and will drain 5 Ah from a 12V battery in one hour, 10Ah in two hours..etc.
